This month our volunteer event will be taking care of the trees at the North Shore. We will be mulching the trees to retain moisture and prevent soil erosion. Mulching the trees also helps with temperature regulation and weed reduction.
The Dos and Don’ts of mulching trees:
DO maintain a level of 2-4 inches in mulch depth while leaving an inch or two of space between the mulch and tree base.
DO NOT create a mulch volcano by piling up excessive mulch around the tree trunk. Please keep it level.
DO try and keep the mulching uniform and tidy with a 2-3 foot ring.
DO have a good time and know your participation means a lot to the preservation of the park.
We will be working from 9am-12pm on Saturday morning. Please meet at the Rock Elm Shelter at North Shore Entrance. Bring work gloves, sturdy shoes and clothing, sunscreen, bug repellent, and drinks. The Friends will supply the tools. To make sure we have enough tools and materials, please let us know if you are coming by contacting us at info@friendsofdevilslake.org.
Oh, and lunch will be provided by Concessions when finished!
Hope to see you there!
